Bu makale, yabancı dil derslerinde metinle çalışarak okuma becerilerinin geliştirilmesinin yollarını ve öğrencilerin işlevsel okuryazarlığını şekillendirmedeki rollerini ele almaktadır.
Modern eğitim sisteminin ana görevlerinden biri, edindikleri bilgileri yaşam durumlarında etkili bir şekilde kullanabilen, yüksek işlevsel okuryazarlığa sahip bir bireyin yetiştirilmesidir. İşlevsel okuryazarlık sadece dil öğrenimine değil, aynı zamanda bireyin sosyal aktivitesinin ve eleştirel düşüncesinin gelişimine de katkıda bulunur. İngilizce ve Türkçe başta olmak üzere yabancı dillerin öğretiminde metinle çalışma, öğrencinin okuma, anlama, bilgiyi analiz etme ve iletişim amaçlı kullanma becerilerini geliştiren önemli bir araçtır.
Yabancı dil derslerinde metinle çalışmak, öğrencilerin işlevsel okuryazarlığını arttırmanın ana aracıdır. Metni okuma, anlama, analiz etme ve onu iletişimsel bir faaliyete dönüştürme sürecinde öğrenciler bilişsel aktivite, mantıksal düşünme ve dil yeterliliği geliştirir. Bu da, modern eğitim sisteminin temel amacının – çok yönlü gelişmiş, hayata yönelik bir bireyin - oluşturulmasına izin verir.
Çalışmanın bilimsel ve pratik önemi, sorunun teorik olarak anlaşılması ve tanımlanmasında, ayrıca bu yönün öğretmen pratiğinde uygulanmasına yönelik somut adımların geliştirilmesinde yatmaktadır.
